GM Takes Green Supply Chain Program Down Under

April 3, 2008 - General Motors has expanded its green supply chain program, first launched in China in October 2005, to Australian subsidiary GM Holden.  The program, a joint project with the World Environment Center (WEC), aims to "promote sustainable development at every link of the automotive supply chain."

The program will follow in the footsteps of GM Shanghai's green supply chain effort, which reported significant environmental gains at the completion of its pilot phase in August 2007. GM Holden suppliers will work with a series of outside environmental experts to enhance their environmental performance and reduce operational costs from manufacturing processes.

"The aim of the GM/WEC partnership is to demonstrate the ability to achieve specific, measurable results that improve competitiveness across the supply chain through the application of sustainable development practices," says WEC president Terry F. Yosie.

GM is a member of WEC, a nonprofit organization organisation that encourages sustainable business practices via partnerships with governments, universities, and other stakeholders. In addition to China, WEC's "Greening the Supply Chain" program has been launched with other corporate partners in Mexico, Brazil, and Romania.
