HP Nabs SmartWay Status for North American Product Shipments

Aug. 8, 2008 - Hewlett-Packard has qualified all business PC, printing, and server products shipped in the United States and Canada under the U.S. EPA's SmartWay Transport program for fuel-efficient, low-carbon shipping.

The computermaker has become the first to qualify to have the SmartWay logo placed on its product packaging after certifying that its surface transportation network was composed entirely of SmartWay-compliant carriers.

"With more than 210,000 partners and retailers in the United States and around the globe, HP is working to not only reduce the environmental impact of its own products and operations, but also the impact of our entire supply chain network," says Tony Prophet, senior vice president, worldwide supply chain operations.

HP says it plan to increase its use of SmartWay Transport-certified carriers for all of its products, with additional products expected to qualify soon. The company is also piloting a project with suppliers in China to expand its use of recyclable plastic pallets for international shipments.
