Macy’s Shifts to Recycled Paper Bags, Greener Packing Materials
April 21, 2008 - A month after Nordstrom unveiled a similar initiative,
Macy's says it is switching to recycled-content paper shopping bags and recyclable packaging for its online shipments.
Starting this month, Macy’s will switch from its current handled
shopping bag to one made with 30% recycled-content kraft paper. The new bag, which is 100% recyclable, replaces a laminated paper bag that contains no recycled material and cannot be recycled due to its plastic coating.
In addition, all
Macy’s stores will begin selling reusable
cotton totes priced at $3.95. One dollar from each purchase will be donated to the National Park Foundation.
Packing and gift wrap are getting a green makeover as well. Macy’s direct-to-consumer businesses –
macys.com, bloomingdales.com and Bloomingdale’s
By Mail – will shift from synthetic "packing peanuts" to biodegradable,
compostable loosefill packing material made from corn and potato
starch.
Macy’s stores and macys.com already use gift boxes and wrapping tissue made from 100% recycled-content material. This spring, Bloomingdale’s wrapping tissue will also shift to recycled material. In addition, Bloomingdale’s will offer a 100% recycled paper and ribbon gift-wrapping option for the 2008 holiday season.
