New Sustainable Packaging Stacks Up for Club Retailers

Jan. 9, 2008 - Stacked to the ceiling with large or in-bulk products, club retail outlets such as Costco and Sam's Club have unique requirements for merchandise storage and display. Drake Company's new Lite-Pak packaging system was created to meet the environmental packaging requirements of major retailers like Wal-Mart, while also streamlining the packaging process for marketers merchandising through club stores.

Lite-Pak uses a pre-set template format to create the right primary packaging size and pallet configuration to meet a club stores specific space requirements. Lite-Pak packages also seal completely around the edges, offering extra rigidity that can support double-stacked pallets. The product requires less overall packaging material because it maximizes available space in shipping trailers and retail storage and display areas. In addition, more efficiently packed trailers translate to fewer shipping runs from distribution center to retail end-user, reducing carbon emissions from transport operations.

"Consumer packaged goods companies (CPGs) that market through club stores want to be environmentally responsible, but the complex guidelines for primary packaging and displays make merchandising a daunting task even for the most seasoned package design veteran," says Dave Gaidousek, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Drake. "When you combine our countrys growing environmental concern with a rapidly growing club store retail segment, sustainable packaging systems like Lite-Pak can help reduce a companys carbon footprint."
